    Hello -

A driver’s license is necessary in many places in the world and a necessity for many expats.

Do you have a driver’s license? What do you need to get a driver’s license in Sri Lanka? How much does it cost? Do you need to take lessons? What tests and paperwork are required? How long does the process take?

Do you need special documents as an expatriate? Is an international driver’s license required in Sri Lanka?

Thanks for sharing your experience, advice and questions with the members of EasyExpat!

if your foreigner needs to get Sri Lanka Driving license, there is two ways 1. Apply local driving license from Department of Motor Traffic you can apply on arrival at the airport cost ~25 $ , 2. getting international driving permit from Automobile Association of Ceylon cost you 8500 LKR , if your rent a car in sri lanka from iWay Rent a car they will get your license before you land in Sri Lanka , their service completely free

You need to be at least 18 years old and pass a medical exam. The cost is typically between 5000-8000 LKR. You must take driving lessons, usually around 10-15 hours, and pass both a written and practical test. The process takes a few weeks to a couple of months. As an expat, you'll need your passport, visa, and possibly additional residency documents. While an international driver's license isn't required, it's recommended to have one.
